We have all done it: closed a tab you still needed, or shut the whole browser with twenty tabs open. The good news is Chrome has a few ways to bring tabs back. The bad news is they have real limits, especially after a crash. Here is how to recover closed tabs, and how to make sure a lost session never sets you back again.
Reopen the last closed tab
Press Ctrl+Shift+T (Cmd+Shift+T on Mac) to reopen the tab you just closed. Keep pressing it to walk back through recently closed tabs one by one. It is the fastest fix for a single misclick.
Use the Recently closed list
Open the Chrome menu, go to History, and you will see "Recently closed". It can restore a whole window in one click. The catch is that this list is limited to a small number of entries and can be cleared, so it is not something to rely on for long.
Restore your last session on startup
In Settings, under "On startup", choose "Continue where you left off". Chrome will then reopen your last session automatically. This helps, but only for the most recent session, and only when the browser closes cleanly. After a crash, or if you have already opened a fresh window, it often will not help.
Why these fail after a crash
The methods above depend on Chrome closing normally and on a short, capped history. If the browser crashes, updates, or you close it and reopen a blank window, your previous tabs can be gone with no reliable way back. That is exactly when people lose an important research session or hours of work.
Never lose a session again
Tab Haven is a free Chrome extension that quietly auto-saves your open tabs in the background. If you close the browser by accident or it crashes, you open Tab Haven and recover a recent session with one click, even if you never saved it manually. You can also save any set of tabs on purpose and restore it whenever you like. Everything stays in your own browser, with no account.
Quick recap
- Ctrl+Shift+T reopens the last closed tab.
- History → Recently closed can restore a window, but the list is short.
- "Continue where you left off" reopens the last clean session only.
- For real protection against crashes and accidents, use an extension that auto-saves and lets you recover a session.
