Once you have dozens or hundreds of Claude.ai conversations, finding the right one becomes the hard part. Claude does let you search, but only by chat title, so a thread you never renamed can be almost impossible to find. Here is how to search your Claude chat history effectively and get to any conversation in seconds.
Use Claude's built-in search
There is a search box in your Claude chat list. It matches the titles of your conversations, so typing a keyword will surface any chat whose title contains it. The limitation is that it only looks at titles, not at what you actually said inside the chat.
Rename chats so search can find them
Because search is title-based, the single most effective thing you can do is give your important chats clear titles. Rename "Untitled" or vague auto-titles to something you would search for later, like "invoice template" or "onboarding email draft". A few seconds of renaming pays off every time you look for it.
Search inside a single chat with Ctrl+F
If you have the right conversation open but need a specific line, use your browser's find function, Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac), to jump to any word on the page. It will not search across chats, but it is perfect for finding a detail within one long thread.
